the studio description:
The studio will begin with the giant robot as a paradigm, or more appropriately
as a mascot. Instead of abandoning monumentality and form in favor of movement
and electronic mechanism each student will attempt to combine spatial focus
and intensity with mechanical and/or electronic pyrotechnics. The brief
will ask for the creation of a permanent focus with architectural qualities
and merits commensurate with a monument. The annual cycle of use will vary
drastically as once, maybe three times, a year hundreds of thousands of
people will converge on it. We will define an architectural problem that
is neither monument nor gizmo but something else that can incorporate both
positions. They may or may not move but they will certainly be robots.
